Summer is Over

What a wonderful summer! We enjoyed swimming with good friends, July 4th fireworks, eating watermelon outside, planting a garden (that the deer ate), and a trip to the beach. Sometimes I wonder why summer has to end. But, now it’s time to have fun learning. We have started with a new year of curriculum. We have rejoined Cherish Home school Group. We are looking forward to another exciting, fulfilling year of school.
Saxon Math

We are well into 1st Grade of Saxon Math. When I first perused this curriculum I thought it too repetitive and maybe a little boring. However, I had heard so many great things about Saxon I just couldn’t resist. It didn’t hurt any that my elementary school teacher sister-in-law that now home schools had the teacher’s manual I could borrow to see if I like it.
Needless to say all the praise was true. Yes, it is repetitive and yes, maybe sometime boring, but AG knows her math problems backwards and forwards. No counting fingers or eating cheerios - it’s just all in that cranium of hers.
In this lesson we made graphs of families with one, two, three, four and five children. I just love the pictures she drew of her friends and family.

It looks like the families with 2 children won.

AG’s cousins gave her a subscription to Clubhouse Jr. Magazine for Christmas. There is a section of jokes in the back that is her favorite part. It is the first thing she reads every time a new issue arrives and she tells the jokes over and over.
She made up the joke all by herself and asked us if she could submit it to the magazine. She was ecstatic when she saw it published in the April, 2008 issue.

Little House on the Prairie

AG & I started reading the Little House on the Prairie series tonight. Some good friends are reading the series and I thought it a good idea to read it at the same time so the kids would have something to talk about besides webkinz.
Well, AG was not too excited about starting the first book Little House in the Big Woods. I told her if after three chapters she wanted to stop, we would. We got through the first chapter tonight and she didn’t want to stop. She is already planning a trip to Missouri to visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum.
The books we are reading are the very books my grandmother gave me when I was around 7 or 8 years old. They are tattered and yellowed but how precious they are to me. As I was reading tonight so many memories came back to me. I remember my best friend, Debbie, and I reading these books aloud and recording ourselves. Oh, how I wish I could get my hands on those cassette tapes. I also remember wanting to be Laura Ingalls. My life wasn’t too far from hers seeing as how I grew up in a third world country. We did without a lot of the conveniences we know today. We also lived and worked with the Indians of Guatemala and things were very similar to Laura’s life.
My desire as a child was to go to Missouri and see the little house where Laura lived but I never was able to go. My desire now is to make it possible for AG to go and see that little house.

We are using Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer for History and I love it! It starts at the beginning with Nomads and goes through history chronologically. I strongly suggest if you do this curriculum to also purchase the Activity Book
to go along with it. AG can’t wait to find out what the activity will be after every lesson.
In this lesson we learned about the ancient writings of the Egyptians and Sumerians.
She made a cuneiform writing in clay.

She also painted hieroglyphics on paper and made a scroll.

Her hieroglyphics message was “I love you.”

AG is excited about Science. We started Answers in Genesis Science curriculum this year and are thoroughly enjoying it. The three books series is God’s Design for Life and include The Human Body, The World of Plants
, and The Animal Kingdom
. We decided to learn about the body first since the best time to learn about plants is when we plant our garden this spring. Our trip to the beach will be a great time to discover the creatures around the ocean.
Well, AG was not too thrilled when she realized we were going to paint the names of her bones on her body before bath time, but she was a good sport.
She will never forget where her cranium is!

Valentine’s Party

I am a member of the Cherish Home School Group and today was the annual Valentine’s Party. There were over 40 children there between the ages of 4 and 12 - it was noisy!
It was quite an effort for me to make it because I had to flip-flop my work schedule (I work from home in the afternoons.) I was so glad I made the effort. AG had such a wonderful time. It made me remember being a kid and I cannot for the life of me remember being in a group situation that large.
