How to Teach the Letter R

R is a tricky letter because the sound is harder to say than most, and the capital takes three separate strokes to write. Go slowly with it, and give your child lots of chances to play with the sound. Here is how I'd use the letter R worksheets on this page.

1. Start with a growl. R says /r/ as in rabbit. To make the sound, the tongue pulls back and the lips round a little, with no tongue touching the teeth. Have your child growl like a tiger, "rrrr," or pretend to be a race car revving its engine. Kids hear the sound better when they get to be loud and silly with it.

2. Break the capital R into steps. Think of it as a P with a leg. Draw the stick down, add the bump at the top, and finish with a slanted kick out to the right. Lowercase r is much easier: a short line down, then a small curve at the top like a little arm. Practice on a big scale first, by drawing in shaving cream, writing on a window with a dry-erase marker, or tracing with a toy car in a tray of flour.

3. Gather some R words. Pull out a ring, a rock, a rubber duck, or a red crayon and say each name together. Take a rainy-day walk and point out puddles and rainbows. Other words to add are rabbit, rose, robot, rocket, and rug.

4. Know the common slip-ups. Capital R is often written as a P because the leg gets left off, so have your child add it last. Lowercase r can look like n, so point out that r is a short line with a tiny arm and n has a full hump. Some children also flip the R backward, so a small dot at the starting point goes a long way.

The tracing pages, coloring sheets, and beginning sounds worksheets on this page go along with each step.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Letter R

Why is the letter R hard for some kids to say?
The /r/ sound asks for more tongue control than most others, so it's often one of the last sounds children master. It's common for kids to say "wabbit" for rabbit, and many outgrow it between ages 5 and 7. If you're concerned, a speech-language pathologist can help.

What sound does the letter R make?
R makes the /r/ sound, as in rain, rabbit, and ring. It's a voiced sound, so your child should feel a slight vibration in their throat. At the start of a word, it's usually easy to spot, but it changes a little when it follows a vowel, like in car or bird.

What words start with the letter R?
A few easy ones to start with are rabbit, rain, rainbow, ring, rock, rose, robot, rocket, red, rug, rice, and river. Choose objects your child can hold, like a rock or a ring, so the word and the sound go together.

How can I help my child write capital R?
Teach it as two shapes your child already knows. Draw a P first, then add a diagonal leg. Saying "down, bump, kick" while writing helps them remember the order. Practicing the leg on its own, with slanted lines on a whiteboard, can make the last step easier.

What does R do when it comes after a vowel?
It changes the vowel sound. In words like car, her, bird, for, and turn, the R takes over and makes a new sound. Teachers sometimes call this "bossy R." That's a kindergarten and first grade topic, so for now, focus on R at the beginning of words.

What are some easy ways to practice the letter R at home?
Go on a rainbow hunt, have a race with toy cars, build a rocket from a paper tube, or make a rice sensory bin and hide R objects inside. A few minutes of playful practice does more than a long sit-down session.

Which letter R worksheets should we work on first?
Tracing is the best place to start since the capital R has several parts. Once your child can do those with confidence, the beginning sounds sheet will help them listen for /r/ in words. The coloring pages are a nice, easy option for when you want to ease off.
