How to Teach the Letter Z

Z comes last in the alphabet, but it's one of the easier letters to write. It's also a good one to teach because kids love the buzzy sound and words like zoom and zigzag. Here is how I'd use the letter Z worksheets on this page.

1. Start with the buzz. Z says /z/ as in zebra. Have your child press their teeth together, smile, and make a bee sound, "zzzzz," while touching their throat. They should feel a hum. If your child already knows the letter S, have them try /s/ right after. The mouth looks identical, but /s/ is a quiet hiss with no hum, so this is a quick way to hear the difference.

2. Teach the zigzag. Capital Z and lowercase z are written the same way, just in different sizes: a line across the top, a slanted line down to the left, and a line across the bottom. Chant "across, slide, across" as your child draws. Before using a pencil, try making zigzags with a toy car on a masking tape road, with a fingertip in a tray of sugar, or with a wet paintbrush on the sidewalk.

3. Find the Z words. Z words are harder to find, so line up a few props ahead of time. A zipper on a jacket, a toy zebra, a zucchini from the kitchen, and a picture of the zoo cover a lot of ground. Zip and unzip the jacket while saying "z-z-zip," or zoom a toy car across the table. Z also shows up at the end of words like buzz and quiz, so add those when your child is ready.

4. Watch for lookalikes. Z is often mixed up with the number 2 and with S. Both have a curve, and Z does not. It's made of straight lines only. Backwards Z's are common too, and they end up looking like a squared-off S. Put a green dot at the top left corner so your child knows where to begin and which way to head first.

The tracing pages, coloring sheets, and beginning sounds worksheets on this page are set up to match these steps.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Letter Z

Is the letter Z hard for preschoolers?
Not really. It has three straight lines and no curves, so many children can trace it by age 4. The slanted line in the middle is the part that takes practice, since it's harder to control than a straight line going across or down.

What sound does the letter Z make?
Z makes the /z/ sound, the one you hear in zoo, zip, and zero. It's a voiced sound, which means there's a buzz in the throat. In English, Z has just one sound, so it's simple to teach.

What words start with the letter Z?
Easy choices for beginners are zebra, zoo, zip, zipper, zero, zigzag, zoom, zucchini, and zap. There aren't many Z words, so a short list is all your child needs. Real objects like a zipper or a toy zebra make them easier to remember.

What are some words that end with Z?
Try buzz, fizz, quiz, jazz, and fuzz. Words with a double Z usually end with the same buzzing sound as the beginning of zoo. They're a nice follow-up once your child can hear /z/ at the start of a word.

Do I say "zee" or "zed"?
It depends on where you live. People in the US say "zee," while Canada, the UK, and many other countries say "zed." Use whichever name your family uses. The sound is the same in both cases.

Why does my child write Z backwards?
Reversals are very common at this age, and Z is one of the easiest letters to flip because the slanted line can go either way. A starting dot and a little arrow showing the direction can help a lot. If it keeps happening, take a break from paper and practice big zigzags in the air or on a whiteboard.

What are some fun ways to practice the letter Z at home?
Play a zoo animal game where your child makes a zigzag path for each animal, have a zipper race with jackets, or do a "buzz like a bee" challenge. You can also zoom toy cars on a zigzag track made of tape. Keep it playful and short.

Which letter Z worksheets should we start with?
Tracing is the best first stop, because the diagonal stroke is the part that needs the most practice. Once that feels comfortable, the beginning sounds page lets your child practice hearing /z/ in words. The coloring pages make a nice break for a day when your child needs something easier.
